The difference: What makes Fighting Fit different from our Saturday class is that there are no non-compliant drills – i.e no sparring and no fighting of any kind. In this class, there is never a time that strikes are being aimed at an individual - only to pads they may be holding for their partner. Plus I try not to go into too much detail as to what the combative applications of the movement are. This way the focus stays on the conditioning and less on theoretical aspects. Self defence: This class is still self defence oriented. While tactical and strategical aspects of self defence won't be covered, the physical attributes and the techniques used to develop them are all fighting-based. So whether you're interested in learning how to fight or not - that's what you'll be getting! The idea is that if you ever did have to fight your way out of a situation, your body will already have been conditioned for it from the class. In a sense, you're body is being taught to fight, even if your brain doesn't know it!
Technical stuff The class format includes… Standing and grounded mobility drills Dynamic stretching Stand up striking Standing and grounded positional exercises Grounded striking Abstract exercises Cool-down / stretching. The pace is on/off, meaning bursts of intensive work followed by short periods of rest - as opposed to an hour of continuous aerobic exercise (boring!) This helps replicate the athletic requirements of street self defence.
